Caulking can be useful for:

• Sealing out moisture
• Improving appearance by patching cracks or gaps
• Save energy by stopping air leaks
• Some types can be used as a sealant (adhesive)

Sometimes the “cheapest” caulk or sealant is not necessarily the least expensive alternative in the long run.  For example, if an exterior caulk starts failing and allows water to leak and ruin something like a wall, it would have been significantly better to buy a little better product to start with.

"Latex-Based" caulks are about the easiest interior calk to use.

"Siliconized Latex" works well for interior-exterior applications.

"Advanced Polymer" formulated calukings often work best for exterior applications.
